RCM Students' Union

Nathan Cho, RCM Students' Union President 2017-18
Studying at the RCM and living in a city as culturally rich as London offers an incredible opportunity for any aspiring musician. The RCM Students’ Union is here to help you make the most of it.

The Students' Union (SU) is a lively student body that includes every student enrolled at the RCM. It assumes a central role in the student experience and divides its work into five main initiatives: student socials, health and wellbeing, student feedback, pastoral care and supporting student-led music. As well as these student-facing aspects of its work, the SU also represents the student voice on various college committees, dealing with everything from day-to-day matters to the very highest level of decision-making. The SU also hosts a variety of student-run societies which, as well as being great fun, are in line with our main initiatives.

The SU hosts a range of social events throughout the year, from Freshers' Week to the Summer Ball, from inter uni-socials and Museum hopping to themed evenings events. Most of these events are held in our very own, newly refurbished home – BaRCM. The SU strongly believes that, to work hard and to practice well, it is important to have sufficient recreation time to socialise and have fun with fellow students. Our social events not only provide much-needed respite from study, but offer the opportunity to make connections with fellow musicians and establish a network for collaboration and music-making.

The Union works hard to encourage health and wellbeing in the student body and collaborates closely with Student Services to facilitate this. We provide and promote a selection of events each term under this agenda, ranging from meditation to workout sessions and yoga through our fitness society. We are also keen to promote spiritual wellbeing; we have strong links with the Imperial College chaplaincy and encourage students to use this resource.

The SU is here as a place for help and advice on all aspects of College life and student life in general.

The SU office is always open for general enquiries or just for a chat. If you have a more sensitive issue you would like to discuss one-to-one with one of the student officers, rather than a member of staff, you can make an appointment or drop in during one of our student triage hours.

If you have any feedback on any aspects of College life the SU is the place to come. The SU regularly asks for feedback from students about their experience in a hope to continue improving the service both the SU and the RCM are providing. The SU is able to raise any student issues in the appropriate forums within the College and the College really does listen.

As well as our social and well-being events the Students’ Union runs a number of musical activities for students to get involved in, such as the Students' Film Orchestra. We also have an active Jazz Society who perform regularly both in and outside of College. The SU encourages students to initiate and take part in student lead music-making and will offer concert and admin support for any such projects.

The Students’ Union is keen to ensure that all its students have a well-rounded experience and grow as people as well as musicians. Our links with Imperial College Union mean all RCM students are invited to join any of their 300 clubs and societies which the SU encourages them to do.

Whether you’re an undergraduate, postgraduate or doctoral student, the SU is here as a helping hand along the way and to make sure you get the most out of your time here.
